Yesterday it was Walter's S.I.X.T.H. birthday!
Goodness me how the time flies.
Walter and I have a love - hate relationship... that's SLOWLY working its way to a love-love-love-love relationship. Slowly.
He used to eat my shoes, and now he doesn't... peace is happening. It's a beautiful thing.
To celebrate this little doggie's big day I made him some treats! Dogs can't eat chocolate, but they can eat carob. And, since I'm on a big carob trip right now, I thought I'd share some with Walter!
Carob Doggie Treats - What you need:
- 1/2 cup rice flour
- 1/4 cup carob powder
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon almond butter*
- 1/3 cup water
*So, I've definitely dug way into my research on feeding almonds to dogs... almonds are safe for dogs to eat in moderation. They are not toxic to dogs like either macadamia nuts or walnuts. These treats are, well, treats... and there's only one tablespoon of almond butter in the whole batch! So, as long as your pup doesn't break into the entire batch plus the jar of almond butter - things should be just fine! You can also substitute in peanut butter for almond butter. Peanut butter is also safe for dogs (in moderation)!
Carob Doggie Treats - What you do:
Mix all of the ingredients together in a large bowl. If the dough is too dry, add one teaspoon of water at a time until the dough comes together well. Knead the dough into a ball. Refrigerate for 30 minutes for easy rolling and treat cutting.
After 30 minutes, take the dough out of the fridge. Next, preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius (350 fahrenheit) , and prep a baking sheet by lining it with parchment paper.
While the oven is heating, liberally sprinkle a surface with flour (I continued to use rice flour here). Push or roll out the dough until it is about 1 centimeter thick. Using a cookie cutter, cut out treat shapes and place them on the baking sheet.
Bake at 180 celsius for 10 to 12 minutes.
This makes approximately 36 mini heart shaped treats.
I borrowed this recipe , but the first time around I had some issues with it - this is an adapted version!
Walter loved LOVED these things! He was a happy birthday boy!
(And they're vegan AND gluten free!)
Now go make some treats for your dog!
And listen to some really great music as well!!!
Baking soundtrack - Tunes to inspire your inner baker:
So, apparently this girl is all over the music waves right now with the song Royals... but my personal favourite is...
